Most owner-managed businesses are valued using an earnings multiple, typically applied to EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation). The multiple depends on sector, business size, growth trajectory, quality of earnings and current market conditions. Asset-backed businesses may be valued on a net asset basis.
