In our founding office, on the boardroom wall, there was a certificate, a bit worn at the edges. It’s a small thing to have caused this much fuss. But that piece of paper, dated 4th August 1886, is where all of this began — and it’s had us thinking, all these years later, about what actually got us here.
It wasn’t a strategy. It wasn’t a five-year plan, or a slick rebrand, though we’ve had a few of those along the way. It was people. It still is.
140 years is a strange number to sit with. It’s long enough that nobody currently working at WDS was here for most of it. Long enough to have lived through two world wars, a Depression, an oil crisis, more recessions than anyone wants to count, and a pandemic that shut our office doors for the first time in living memory. And yet here we are — still trading, still Yorkshire, still doing more or less the same job Walter Dawson set out to do when he first put his name to that certificate: helping people make sense of their money and plan for what’s next.
None of that happens without the people on the other side of the desk.
We’ve worked with farming families who’ve handed the business down through three generations, watching the accounts change hands right alongside them. We’ve sat with business owners through funding rounds, through recessions that could have finished them, through the quiet, unglamorous work of just keeping something going. We’ve handled probate for families at the worst moments of their lives, and helped others plan for the best ones. Some of our clients have been with us for 40 years. Some of our staff have too.
That’s not something a firm can manufacture. It’s not down to marketing, or size, or being the cheapest option in the phone book. It’s down to trust, built up slowly, one year and one client at a time — and that’s genuinely all 140 years really is: 140 years of people trusting us with things that matter to them.
